Autumn-Winter Clothing Guide

  • Start with the person who already has an outfit (and can’t change) OR the person with the most prominent outfit, and then work around them.

Try starting with mum or daughter, since women clothing tends to have more patterns, colours and or textures.

Avoid words or large lettering & logos. Clothing that does not attract attention to itself is the ultimate goal.

For the children, choose outfits that fit well- especially small children.

Check your outfits in front of the mirror, not just the one you like best.

Try sitting, squatting, leaning forward, etc.

The kid’s clothes should work well in motion so that we can play during your session. Think flying, tickling, running and hanging upside down!

  • Compliment with colours!

The days of all white shirts and matching pants are long gone!

Colour combinations are in (see more suggestions below).

Warmer colours try: Cream, Mustard and Denim

For cooler colours try: Pastel pinks, Blues and Grey

You don’t want to look like you are all in a ‘uniform’.

  • Shoes?

Running sneakers do not work well.

Canvas, leather, boots, heels are GREAT!

Co-ordinate shoe choices with your outfits

Choose weather-appropriate shoes for your day.

Choose no-show socks (even on the kids!) A bright white sock could ruin your whole look!

For men in long pants, a dark grey or dark colour sock works best, or no-show like above!

Weather appropriate shoes make a massive difference - if it’s a cold morning - enclosed shoes will stop the kiddies freezing and shivering!

  • You don’t need HEAVY ‘studio’ makeup. What you would normally wear is perfect.

Keep it natural - and make sure you are happy with it.

If you’re thinking about trying out that trendy fluorescent orange eye shadow you saw in a magazine, save it for another time.

Choose natural makeup that makes you feel beautiful, then add a light layer of powder to reduce shine, just before the session.

For women: A soft-curl blow-dry always looks good. It flatters the face and looks amazing in photos!

A tight ponytail can give the appearance of ‘no hair’ for women and girls.

Kids: make sure fringes aren’t covering their eyes. a simple clip or headband is perfect!

Men: Get a beard trim (if needed!)

Oversized headbands (with large decorations ie- flowers & bows) on babies can take the attention away from their beautiful little face.

  • Smartwatches & Fitbits do not photograph well (black screen)

Transitions Glasses will look like you are wearing sunglasses - we are outside!! Bring a pair of spectacles that have clear lenses, or let your photographer know so we can see your eyes in the images)

    Wear your family heirloom pieces!

    (earrings, watches, necklaces etc)

  • White tops and/or blouses under a dark jacket create a slimming effect to the eye

All-White shoes (think - converse style) and white tops with Denim Jeans look great if everyone is styled together… Make sure your white tops suit your own personal body shape/style.

Never wear the exact same t-shirt for every family member (like the white Bonds t-shirt).
